The place

The Maldives is not a place you tour. Each resort occupies its own island, so the moment the seaplane leaves you, the world narrows to a ring of sand and the reef around it. That reef is the point. The water inside the lagoon is bathwater-warm and lit from below; outside the drop-off, manta rays and whale sharks work the channels. Choose an atoll the way you would choose a season: Baa for the biosphere and the manta aggregation, North Malé for speed and polish, the far south for emptiness.

  • Resort islands are private. Alcohol is served on them and not on inhabited local islands.
  • Seaplanes do not fly after dark — a late arrival into Malé means an airport hotel night.
  • Half-board and all-inclusive plans matter here more than anywhere: there is nowhere else to eat.
