Maldives · Baa Atoll
The resort that invented barefoot luxury in 1995 and still sets its terms. A densely wooded island where villas hide in the jungle rather than lining a beach.
Barefoot luxury, the original
The property
Soneva Fushi is the antidote to the polished overwater cliché. Kunfunadhoo is one of the largest islands in the Maldives and it has been left deliberately wild — villas sit under dense vegetation, connected by sand paths you walk barefoot. The 'No News, No Shoes' philosophy started here. What keeps it at the top is the detail underneath the informality: an observatory, a glass-blowing studio, a waste-to-wealth centre that recycles almost everything on the island, and one of the deepest wine cellars in the Indian Ocean.
The place itself
The resort's own, as it is today — not a shoot we commissioned and not a stock library. Drag or scroll.

Where you sleep
Beach villas and residences, most with private pool; a small number of overwater villas. Which one is right depends on the month and who is travelling — that is the first thing we will ask.

What makes it itself
The sand in front of the resort is its own, so the walk from your room to the water crosses nobody else.
Treatments on the property — massage, steam room, sauna, so a bad-weather afternoon has somewhere to go.
Run from the resort, which matters here: the boat leaves from your own jetty rather than an hour up the coast.
Supervised hours for the children, which is the difference between a holiday and a fortnight of childcare with a view.
55 rooms in total, so the beach never feels shared and the staff learn your name in a day or two.

Two islands, one quote
Many of our travellers pair two properties in one trip. We book the inter-resort transfer and quote the whole routing as one figure.
