Fiji

The South Pacific at its most hospitable. Soft-coral diving that divers rank among the world's best, private-island resorts at every scale, and a culture where the greeting is not performed for guests.

The place

Fiji's reputation for warmth is not marketing — the Bula welcome is genuinely part of daily life, and it is the single thing guests mention most. Geographically it splits into useful pieces: the Mamanuca and Yasawa chains off Nadi are the easy, beautiful, well-served islands; Vanua Levu and Taveuni in the north hold the Somosomo Strait, whose soft-coral walls are world-class; and Kadavu in the south has the Great Astrolabe Reef. Because there are so many islands, Fiji does private-island exclusivity at a wider range of price points than anywhere else on this list.

Worth knowing

  • Fiji Time is real and mostly a gift. Build slack into transfer days.
  • Resorts are strongly split between family-welcoming and adults-only — this matters more here than elsewhere.
  • Cyclone season runs November to April; the best diving visibility is July to September.
