Why this routing
More on MaldivesTimber, thatch and rope for the first half; retractable roofs and water slides for the second. A deliberate study in how differently the same idea can be executed.
Gili Lankanfushi and Soneva Jani both put you over the lagoon and share almost nothing else. One is rope-lashed timber twenty minutes by boat from the airport, where you sleep on the roof. The other is a vast private lagoon where the bedroom ceiling slides open at the touch of a button. Doing them in sequence is the clearest way to understand what overwater can mean.

Gili Lankanfushi
Lankanfushi · North Malé Atoll
Rooftop sleeping, house-reef snorkelling, the underground wine cellar
Arrive by Speedboat
See Gili LankanfushiDay 1
Arrive Malé, speedboat to Lankanfushi
Twenty minutes by boat from Velana International. There is no seaplane curfew on this leg, so a late flight does not cost you a night at the airport. Shoes go into a bag on the jetty and stay there.
Day 2
The house reef
Guided snorkelling with the marine biologist on a reef calm enough that the island runs most of its dive training on it — rays, reef sharks and turtles, straight off the jetty.
Day 3
The cellar, then the counter
The Wine Cellar sits underground with a cheese room off it. Dinner afterwards at By the Sea, the teppanyaki counter built out over the lagoon.
Day 4
A night on the roof
Every villa here has a netted deck above the roof. One night on it with dinner sent up is the reason people book Gili rather than something newer.

Soneva Jani
Medhufaru · Noonu Atoll
Retractable roof, water slide, overwater cinema, private lagoon
Arrive by Seaplane
See Soneva JaniDay 5
Seaplane north to Noonu Atoll
Daylight-scheduled, and the flight explains Maldivian geography better than any map. Soneva Jani takes twenty-five villas on five and a half kilometres of private lagoon.
Day 6
The roof that opens
The bedroom ceiling slides back at the touch of a button — worth staying awake for once. The slide into the lagoon is the other way down in the morning.
Day 7
Director's Cut
An outdoor cinema-restaurant over the water, with dinner served through the film. The chocolate and ice cream parlour is free and open all day, which matters more than it should.
Day 8
The lagoon at sunset
A private cruise across the whole 5.6 km of it, then dinner at So Starstruck, which sits under the observatory on the roof.
Day 9
Seaplane out
Back to Malé in daylight, in time for the evening flight home.
