Why this routing
More on MauritiusMauritius rewards moving. Ten nights split between Le Morne's UNESCO monolith and the sheltered east coast, with the gorges, the coloured earths and Port Louis' market threaded through.
Most people book one Mauritian beach and stay on it, which wastes the island. This journey uses two bases at opposite corners: Le Morne, where a basalt mountain drops straight into the best kitesurfing water in the Indian Ocean, and Poste de Flacq on the calm east, where the overwater suites and the golf are. Between them, the Black River Gorges and Chamarel.

Arrive, and drive south-west
Nowhere on Mauritius is more than about ninety minutes from the airport. Le Morne is at the far corner, under the basalt monolith it takes its name from.
Day 2
The mountain
Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO cultural landscape and climbable with a guide, booked ahead. Up and back before the heat.
Day 3
The lagoon
The mountain shelters this stretch from the trade winds: six hundred metres of sand and the calmest swimming water on the coast, with One Eye breaking beyond it for the kitesurfers.
Day 4
Chamarel
The seven-coloured earths, the waterfall, and a rum distillery on the way back. Inland Mauritius is the half most beach holidays skip.
Day 5
Black River Gorges
Endemic birdlife and the island's one real forest. Dinner afterwards at East, where there is no menu — you tell the waiter what you like and the kitchen cooks to it.

Overwater suite, floating restaurant, championship golf, fish reserve

Helicopter across the island
Coast to coast, with the flyover of the underwater waterfall off Le Morne — a sand-and-silt illusion, and worth doing once. Prince Maurice is on the quiet east.
Day 7
Overwater, in Mauritius
Suites on stilts over a private bay, which almost nothing outside the Maldives offers. The bay is a natural fish reserve fringed with mangroves.
Day 8
Le Barachois
Dinner on floating pontoons over the fish reserve. Nothing is anchored to the shore and the kitchen sends it out.
Day 9
Golf, then the gardens
The east coast is where the championship courses are. A round, then the U Spa — Sisley, a heated pool and a cold plunge, set in the gardens.
Day 10
Port Louis
The central market, then a Creole table d'hôte lunch — a home kitchen rather than a restaurant, which is how the food here is best met.
Day 11
Drive to the airport
About an hour from the east coast. Most flights home leave at night.
